The Top 5 Myths About Curly Hair (and the Truth Behind Them)

Curly hair comes with its own unique set of challenges—and misconceptions. Many of these myths can lead to frustration and improper care, but with the right knowledge, you can embrace your curls with confidence. Let’s debunk the top five myths about curly hair and uncover the truth behind them.

1. Myth: Curly Hair Doesn’t Need Frequent Washing

While it’s true that many people with curly hair prefer to extend their wash days, a proper cleansing routine is essential for healthy curls. Most people with curly hair benefit from washing about twice a week. However, I strongly advise against going longer than 10 days without washing to maintain a clean and balanced scalp.

If you’re looking to stretch your wash days while keeping your curls in top condition, washing once a week is a great compromise. A healthy scalp leads to happy curls!

2. Myth: Curly Hair Is Always Dry

While curly hair is naturally more prone to dryness than straight hair, this doesn’t mean it has to feel dry. When curls are properly hydrated—with water, not just products—they can feel soft, healthy, and moisturized.

During my Curl Discovery Sessions, I teach clients how to infuse their curls with the water they need and lock that hydration in. The result? Happy, hydrated curls that look and feel amazing.

3. Myth: You Need a Lot of Products to Style Curly Hair

A common misconception is that achieving beautiful curls requires an arsenal of products. Many of my new clients come to me using five to seven products daily. After their Curl Discovery Appointment, I typically recommend just three: a shampoo, a conditioner, and one styling product.

In rare cases, I might suggest two styling products for more complex needs, but simplicity is key. With the right techniques and high-quality products, you don’t need a cluttered shelf to enjoy gorgeous curls.

4. Myth: Frizz Means Your Hair Is Damaged

Frizz often gets a bad reputation, but it’s not necessarily a sign of damage. In most cases, frizz indicates dehydration—a curl’s way of reaching out to the air for moisture.

The solution? Give your hair the water it craves. At your Curl Discovery Session, I’ll teach you how to properly hydrate your hair to eliminate frizz and achieve smoother, more defined curls.

5. Myth: You Need to Completely Re-Wet Your Hair to Refresh Curls

Refreshing your curls shouldn’t be a time-consuming process. Unfortunately, many of my new clients believe they need to re-wet their entire head to refresh their curls daily. This is unnecessary and inefficient.

A proper refresh is a quick, targeted process that should take no more than five minutes. The key to an effortless refresh lies in setting your curls up for success on wash day. At your Curl Discovery Session, I’ll show you how to master this technique and save both time and energy.
